Derrick and Dirt Road

View Article  Oil City's Bottomless Blowout Pond

During the early days of oil exploration in northwest Louisiana, blowouts were a common occurrence.  One such blowout occurred just south of Louisiana Highway 1 near the shores of Caddo Lake.  According to witnesses, a mighty eruption of oil and gas caused the drilling rig to shake, and then begin to sink.  It soon did, completely disappearing in a circular hole in the ground.  The hole quickly filled with water, no part of the drilling rig ever recovered.

A high school friend that was into scuba diving told me that he had personally gone 100’ down in the pond without touching the mast of the drilling rig.
